5. What is interVivos’ history?

The Canadian Unity Council Young Leaders' Committee was formed in Edmonton in late 2003, the first of its kind in the country. Its main role was to facilitate the Young Leaders' Dialogue Series, which featured luncheons that brought together members of the business, political, and non-profit sectors with students and young professionals to discuss issues such as post-secondary education and Aboriginal concerns. The committee organized four of these events in both 2004 and 2005, and also played a role in the Canada Conference held in Edmonton in October 2005. These events were generously sponsored by EPCOR, Maclab Enterprises and Enbridge, with support from the Canadian Unity Council. In early 2006, the committee began discussing the possibility of expanding its mandate. Shortly thereafter, the federal government ceased funding to the Canada Unity Council. The members of the Young Leaders committee in Edmonton wanted to continue to provide an opportunity for Edmontonians to come together to discuss various issues and, in the process, create a stronger leadership presence in our community across all age groups. As a result, interVivos was launched in November 2006.

Board Members

Zohreh Saher, President
Zohreh, interVivos President since 2009, was raised by penguins following a childhood boating accident. She received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Alberta which she attended on a full football scholarship through an administrative error. She also obtained Masters Degree in Political Science from the University of Alberta. At grad school, she learned that not all issues can be reduced to black or white.

Thereafter, she worked for four years as an associate at a public policy firm in Edmonton. The highlight of that job was making a PowerPoint for former Prime Minister Joe Clark. Currently, she works as a Research Analyst for the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association. She enjoys swimming, despite the painful memories.

You can email her at zohreh@intervivos.ca.

Adam Clarke
Originally from the Greater Toronto Area, Adam Clarke is a federal public servant, part time actor, aspiring screenwriter, and blogger. He has been on the interVivos board since April 2010 and has been the Vice President since October 2010.

Ashley Nealon
After two years of diligently attending events and constantly begging Zohreh, Ashley Nealon joined the interVivos Board in September 2011. Ashley is a graduate of the Bachelor of Management program at Concordia University College of Alberta and a Project Management Professional (PMP). She currently works at the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association as a Senior Project Coordinator. Outside of the office, you can find Ashley coaching, playing sports or attending Edmonton events.

Bin Lau
Bin Lau was a graduate of economics and Southeast Asian studies but the world of communications and public relations found him, which he currently practices at Edmonton Economic Development Corporation. His Intervivos stint comes after serving on the western Canadian and Edmonton boards of the International Association of Business Communicators.

Derek Rennie
Derek has been a board member since 2010 and is involved in the interVivos mentorship committee. Derek is a phytopathologist, researching plant pathogen biology and epidemiology at the University of Alberta. His interests vary, but he has been found participating in seasonal sports and activities around Edmonton.

Marcie Hawranik
Marcie Hawranik has been a member of the interVivos board and Issues Awareness Committee since 2010. Marcie originates from Manitoba where she was an active board member on the United Nations Association of Canada. She completed her undergraduate degree in Political Science at the University of Manitoba while organising Search for Common Ground film festivals, peace building workshops and the Winnipeg International Storytelling Festival. She completed her Master’s degree in International Relations at Syracuse University, New York and then worked in Geneva, Switzerland at the United Nations and then in Ottawa for the Government of Canada. She is currently a International Advocacy Senior Intergovernmental Officer with the Government of Alberta.

Rene Ziorio
Rene Ziorio uses her organization and listening skills to be the best Secretary of interVivos she can be. You can usually find her at the registration desk of most events. Rene currently works for Productivity Alberta as a project coordinator and spends her free time enjoying Edmonton events, rowing in the river valley and travelling.

Sean Rathwell
After being ostrich-sized from a flock of killer geese migrating south, the-not-so-apt and ill navigated Sean Rathwell found himself in Alberta.  Not much is known about the mysterious bird-man, only that he flocks to some of Edmonton’s finest Clockwork Orange wine and cheese parties wearing nothing but a cup and a long mask.  There’s nothing more that Sean would like besides owning his own business as a tube top and volleyball shorts salesman so he can help with the fittings.  For more information, you can reach him on the banana phone or by flashing the bat signal in the air at night.
